About ↗

Spinal fusion recovery is measured in months. The fusion itself takes 6–12 months to consolidate. The three absolute rules throughout recovery are: no bending, no twisting, and no lifting. Walking is the best rehabilitation exercise from Day 1.

Five-minute task: you now have spinal fusion hardware in your body — worth noting on your phone's Medical ID in case of a future emergency. Set up your phone's Medical ID →
⚕️ This is friendly general guidance. Your surgeon's and medical team's specific instructions always take priority. If you are concerned about any symptom, contact your surgical team or call emergency services; do not rely on this guide alone.
Recovery essentials
Little things that make a real difference: the kind of practical help other patients wish someone had mentioned.
💊
Straining after spinal fusion is dangerous: manage from day one. Stool softeners →
🚽
Avoids the deep bend that spinal patients cannot safely do in the first weeks. Toilet seat riser →
👟
Reaching your feet is restricted: a long-handled shoehorn avoids bending. Long shoehorn →
🧦

🧽
Reaching feet and lower legs is restricted after spinal fusion. A long-handled sponge is standard occupational therapy advice for the first 4–6 weeks. Long-handled bath sponge →
🛏️
Firm mattress topper: as per spinal surgery guidance, a supportive sleep surface reduces back pain during recovery. Mattress toppers →
🪑
Lumbar support cushion: for sitting in chairs during the weeks when bending is restricted. Lumbar cushions →
🧊
Large back ice pack: reduces inflammation and pain along the incision. Back ice packs →
