How to rate it so today is comparable to tomorrow
Pain swings a lot depending on rest vs. movement and how recently you took pain relief. For a trend you can actually trust: rate it at rest (not mid-movement or right after coughing/standing), around the same time of day, and just before your next dose rather than right after one masks it.
Why daily monitoring matters in recovery
Most post-surgical complications follow a predictable pattern. Pain that improves day by day, then suddenly worsens, is a red flag. Swelling that is decreasing, then re-expands, warrants attention. Temperature that normalises, then rises, is significant. What to track each day
Pain (NRS 0–10). The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) is the standard pain measurement used in clinical practice. Zero is no pain; ten is the worst pain imaginable. For post-surgical recovery, a score above 7 that is not relieved by prescribed analgesia should prompt contact with your team. Temperature. A temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or above, in combination with other symptoms, should be reported to your surgical team. Temperature is most easily measured with a digital thermometer in the armpit (axillary) or ear. Source: healthdirect: fever
Wound appearance. Check once daily in good lighting. Note whether redness is decreasing, whether any discharge is reducing, and whether the wound edges remain together. Photograph the wound with your phone at the same time each day so you have an objective comparison. Source: PMID 32809368

Using Your Daily Recovery Dashboard
Recovery from surgery is not a single event. It is a process that unfolds over days, weeks, and sometimes months. Tracking how you are feeling each day helps you recognise progress, spot early warning signs, and have more productive conversations with your surgical team. The daily dashboard brings together the key things worth monitoring: pain levels, wound status, medication timing, mobility, sleep quality, and nutrition: the factors most closely linked to recovery outcomes.
Why Daily Tracking Matters
Pain that is gradually improving is reassuring. Pain that was improving but is now getting worse (particularly after day 3 or 4) is a signal worth investigating, as it can indicate developing infection or another complication. Similarly, tracking your temperature daily means you are more likely to catch a fever early. Research consistently shows that patients who are actively engaged in monitoring their recovery (and who know what to report and when) have better outcomes and fewer complications missed at home (PMID 33215245).
What to Monitor Each Day
Pain level (0–10): Use the numeric rating scale. Zero is no pain, 10 is the worst imaginable. Most surgical pain peaks at 48–72 hours and then gradually decreases. By week 2, most patients with uncomplicated recoveries report pain at 3 or below at rest. Record both your rest pain and your pain with movement or activity.
Wound status: Is the wound dry? Is the dressing intact? Is there any new redness, swelling, or discharge? Wound changes are most significant when they are new or worsening compared to the previous day.
Temperature: A temperature above 37.5°C in the first 24 hours after surgery can be normal (the surgical inflammatory response). A persistent temperature above 38°C from day 2 onwards warrants contact with your surgical team.
Mobility: Are you moving more today than yesterday? Even small improvements: walking an additional 50 metres, managing stairs more confidently; are meaningful markers of progress. Decreased mobility compared to the previous day, without a clear reason, is worth noting.
Medication: Are you taking what was prescribed, at the right intervals? Missed doses (particularly of preventive medications like blood thinners) should be discussed with your GP or surgical team.
Nutrition and fluids: Adequate protein intake supports wound healing. Adequate hydration reduces DVT risk and supports kidney function, particularly in the first week when you may be taking NSAID pain relief. Track whether you are eating and drinking reasonably well.
When to Contact Your Surgical Team
Contact your GP or surgical team promptly if your dashboard shows: any temperature above 38°C after the first 24 hours, pain that is increasing rather than decreasing after day 3, wound changes (spreading redness, new discharge, wound opening), reduced urine output or dark urine suggesting dehydration, calf pain or leg swelling suggesting possible DVT, or anything that feels wrong even if it does not fit a specific category. Trust your instincts: you know your baseline better than anyone.
Recovery Phases: What Week-by-Week Progress Looks Like
Week 1 is typically the hardest: pain is at its peak, movement is limited, and fatigue is significant. This is normal. Week 2 usually brings noticeable improvement in energy and pain control. By week 3–4, most patients with straightforward recoveries are managing light activities independently. Month 2–3 brings progressive return to normal activities for most procedures. Full recovery (particularly for orthopaedic surgery) may take 6–12 months, though most functional improvement occurs in the first 3 months.
