❓Frequently asked questions
How long does heart surgery recovery take?
Published guidance indicates recovery after major heart surgery such as bypass (CABG) or valve replacement typically takes 6–12 weeks. Stent procedures recover faster, often within days. Your cardiac team and cardiac rehabilitation programme will guide your individual timeline.
What is cardiac rehabilitation and do I need it?
Published guidance from NHS and AHA strongly recommends cardiac rehabilitation after heart surgery or a cardiac event. It is a supervised programme of exercise, education and psychological support that significantly improves outcomes.
When can I drive after heart surgery?
Published guidance indicates you cannot drive for at least 4 weeks after major heart surgery (CABG, valve) and must notify the DVLA/Austroads. After angioplasty and stent, the wait is typically 1 week. You must be off opioid medication and able to perform an emergency stop.
