1 Before Surgery Preparing for Bunion Surgery

This is general pre-operative guidance only. Your surgeon's specific instructions always take priority.

2 Days 1–7 Foot Elevated: Rest

The single most important instruction after bunion surgery: keep your foot elevated above your heart as much as possible. This dramatically reduces swelling and pain. The more time foot up, the better the outcome.

3 Weeks 2–6 Walking Boot Phase

Most bunion patients progress to a walking boot and limited weight-bearing within the first 2 weeks. The speed of progression depends on the type of procedure and X-ray findings at follow-up.

4 Weeks 6–12 Transitioning to Normal Shoes

Around 6 weeks, most patients are cleared to transition to wide, soft, supportive shoes. This is a gradual process — the foot is still healing and swelling continues for months.

5 Month 3+ Full Recovery

Bunion surgery has a long recovery: most patients are not fully recovered for 6–12 months. Swelling in particular persists for up to a year. The final result (including scar maturity and full shoe comfort) takes time.
