Wound tools
Is This Normal?
Based on published NICE NG125 (Surgical Site Infections: Prevention and Treatment, last reviewed May 2023) and NHS wound care guidance (last checked Jul 2026).
Wounds heal differently for everyone. Some redness, mild discharge, and swelling in the first days are normal parts of healing. Some changes need a clinician. This tool walks through common wound concerns and shows what published guidelines say is typical versus when to seek help.
This tool never replaces clinical judgement. If you feel something is wrong (even if this tool says it may be common) trust your instinct and contact your surgical team.
