Hernia Repair Recovery

About ↗

Hernia repair is most commonly performed as day surgery. Bruising and swelling can be dramatic, particularly with inguinal hernia, where it can spread to the genitals — but this is normal. Avoid constipation throughout recovery. The mesh takes 4–6 weeks to fully integrate.

⚕️ This is friendly general guidance. Your surgeon's and medical team's specific instructions always take priority. If you are concerned about any symptom, contact your surgical team or call emergency services; do not rely on this guide alone.
Quick answers
This section summarises what published clinical guidelines say. It does not replace advice from your surgeon, GP, or clinical team. Always follow the instructions you were given at discharge.
How long does hernia repair recovery take?
As per published guidelines (last checked Jul 2026), keyhole (laparoscopic) repair: 1–2 weeks for desk work, 4–6 weeks for physical jobs. Open repair: 2–3 weeks for desk work, 6–8 weeks for heavy lifting roles.
When can I drive after hernia surgery?
As per NHS and DVLA guidelines (last checked Jul 2026), most patients can drive within 1–2 weeks after keyhole repair, 2–4 weeks after open repair — when you can perform an emergency stop without pain.
Is the bulge still there after surgery?
As per published guidelines (last checked Jul 2026), swelling at the repair site is normal for several weeks and can mimic the original hernia. This is post-surgical swelling, not a recurrence. True recurrence is uncommon (1–3% for mesh repairs).
When can I lift again?
As per published guidelines (last checked Jul 2026), avoid lifting more than 5–10 kg for 4–6 weeks. Gradually increase over weeks 6–12. Premature heavy lifting increases recurrence risk.

1 Before Surgery 1 week before

Fasting, medication review (especially blood thinners), and transport home arrangements: all standard preparations. Your surgical team will provide specific instructions.

If you smoke, stopping (even a few weeks before) is linked with better wound healing.

2 Day 1–3 Home same day usually

Most hernia repairs are day-case procedures. Expect swelling and bruising around the site. This can look dramatic but usually settles over 1–2 weeks.

No lifting over 5 kg in the first days: your surgical team will confirm your specific limit. Standing and short walks are encouraged.

Take pain relief regularly rather than waiting for pain to peak.

3 Day 4–7 First week home

Walk daily; increase distance gradually. Many people with desk-based jobs return to work in the second week.

Keep the wound clean and dry. Small strips of tape usually fall off on their own within 1–2 weeks.

4 Week 2–4 Gradual return

Increasing your daily activity slowly. Continue to avoid heavy lifting and abdominal strain.

Driving may be resumed once you can perform an emergency stop without pain, usually 1–2 weeks for keyhole repair, longer for open repair.

5 Month 2+ Full activity typically 6–8 weeks

Most people return to full activity (including sport and heavier lifting) by 6–8 weeks. Full internal healing continues for months.

Contact your surgical team if you notice a new lump at the surgical site, severe or increasing pain, a hard swollen area, fever, or wound discharge. These can signal recurrence or complications.
