Opioid-related constipation persists for as long as you take opioids. Once opioids are reduced or stopped, bowel function typically returns within 1–3 days. If constipation persists beyond this, see your GP.

If you have not had a bowel movement by Day 3–4 after surgery, contact your GP or surgical team. Severe abdominal bloating, pain, or nausea with no bowel movement should be assessed urgently.

Is it safe to strain after surgery?

Mild straining is generally safe for most surgeries. However, avoid excessive straining after abdominal surgery, hernia repair, or rectal surgery. Using a footstool (raised knees) significantly reduces straining effort.

What is the best laxative after surgery?

A combination of a stool softener (docusate sodium) and a stimulant laxative (senna) is most commonly recommended. Lactulose is also effective. Ask your pharmacist what is appropriate given your specific medications. Start at the same time as opioids — do not wait.

Can I take ibuprofen for post-surgery pain to avoid opioids and constipation?

Ibuprofen (and other NSAIDs) do not cause constipation and are effective for many types of post-surgical pain. However, they are not suitable after all surgeries — some procedures or patient conditions contraindicate NSAIDs. Discuss with your surgeon or pharmacist.
